Primary Professions in WoW Classic

There are 9 primary professions in WoW Classic, categorized into crafting and gathering professions. Crafting professions include Alchemy, Engineering, Leatherworking, Blacksmithing, Tailoring, and Enchanting. Gathering professions include Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning.

Crafting Professions

Crafting professions are professions that produce items. These can be, for example, potions, gadgets, armor, or weapons.

Gathering Professions

Gathering professions enable you to collect materials from the world. Herbalism involves gathering flowers, Mining provides ores, and Skinning yields leather from dead animals.

Secondary Professions in WoW Classic

Every character can learn all secondary professions in WoW Classic. First Aid is usually a profession that is learned by all classes. Fishing and Cooking are optional.

How Many Professions Can You Have in WoW Classic?

In WoW Classic you can choose up to 5 professions for your character. You can learn all 3 secondary professions (fishing, first aid, and cooking). You can also choose a maximum of 2 primary professions. A gathering profession and the corresponding crafting profession are often recommended (e.g. Herbalism and Alchemy).

What Are the Best Professions in WoW Classic?

The best profession in WoW Classic depends on your class and can change depending on what content you play.

Best Profession in PvP

If you play mostly PvP, Engineering is always the best profession. Since you need a lot of ores, Mining is often combined with Engineering. If you can get your ores elsewhere, the second profession depends on your class.

Best Professions For Each Class in PvE

If you raid a lot, Alchemy is a very good profession for all classes and allows you to make your own potions. Otherwise, the following job combinations are particularly suitable:

The crafting professions are often tailored to the class’s armor level. Classes that wear plates, such as warriors and paladins, choose Blacksmithing. This allows you to craft endgame armor that can only be worn by the crafter themselves, as they bind when picked up. If you don’t have access to these endgame recipes (e.g. through raids), these professions are often far less valuable.

All classes should also learn First Aid. Fishing and Cooking are optional.

What Is the Most Profitable Profession in WoW Classic?

The most profitable profession in WoW Classic is Alchemy. With Alchemy you are crafting potions and flasks for raiding. These items get really expensive on raid nights, especially on reset days. But Alchemy requires you to be present at the auction house during these raid nights because this market is very competitive and you need to post and cancel a lot. Additionally, Alchemists can make gold with transmuting.

Enchanting is one of the hardest professions to make gold. You need to advertise your service in the trade chat and look for people in need of an enchanting. Since you can’t use the auction house to sell enchants, the trade chat becomes very competitive. Enchanters are even using WeakAuras or Addons to automatically whisper and invite players who are looking for enchants.

Gathering professions, like Mining and Herbalism, are generally not too great in terms of gold per hour. But there are farms (e.g. DM:E jump runs or Lasher farms) some classes can do, that provide a good and steady gold income with the least amount of competition.

What Are the Profession Level Requirements in WoW Classic?

Professions in WoW Classic can be trained to four levels of proficiency: Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan. The character level requirements for primary professions in WoW Classic are as follows:

Note that the gathering professions in WoW Classic only have a level requirement of 5 to learn the profession. Higher levels of proficiency do not have character-level requirements.

How to Unlearn Professions in WoW Classic

You unlearn a profession in WoW Classic in the Skills tab of your character. In the Skills tab click on the profession you want to unlearn. Then find the small “Unlearn” icon at the bottom and click on it.

If you unlearn a gathering or crafting profession, you can then learn a new profession. When you unlearn, you lose all progress and recipes your character has learned. If you later switch back to your old profession, you have to start again at level 1.
