
WoW SoD Hunter Runes
Runes are items that you can find in the world in the Season of Discovery of WoW Classic. Runes can be assigned to equipment slots and give your character powerful passive effects. This WoW SoD Hunter Runes guide explains which Hunter runes are available in SoD, and how you can get them. Included are detailed descriptions of the Hunter rune locations.

How to Get All Hunter Runes in SoD
The following runes are available for the Hunter in SoD. Click on a rune to go directly to the location description.
Update: Since December 2024, all SoD runes and skill books can be purchased from Rune Brokers at level 1. The runes no longer have to be found or unlocked by completing quests (although this is still possible). You’ll find Rune Brokers e.g. at the following locations:

You get the Chimera Shot rune (Hands) at level 2 in your starting zone in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Orc:
- Get the level 2 quest
Hunt for the Rune from Jen'shan in Durotar (42.8 69.2).
- Kill Scorpid Worker in the Valley of Trials until you get
Rune of the Chimera.

You get the Explosive Shot rune (Hands) in the starting zones in the Season of Discovery as follows:

- Drops from Edan the Howler around 41 47.
- Drops from Timber at the lake next to Brewnall Village.
- Drops from Mangeclaw in the east of Dun Morogh around 79 37.
- Drops from Vagash around 62 47.
- Drops from Old Icebeard southwest of Kharanos around 38 53.
- Drops from Fyodi north of Brewnall Village around 30 41.
- Drops from Bjarn west of Gol’Bolar Quarry.
Teldrassil:

You get the Master Marksman rune (Chest) in the starting zones in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Dun Morogh:
- Find the Rustling Bush at 28.8 49.6.
- Cast
Hunter's Mark on the bush and kill the Razormane Poacher that spawns. You’ll receive
Rune of Marksmanship.
Teldrassil:
- Find the Rustling Bush at 46.7 46.3.
- Cast

Mulgore:
- Find the Rustling Bush at 59.0 54.6.

You get the Flanking Strike rune (Legs) in the starting zones in the Season of Discovery as follows:

You get the Carve rune (Hands) with level 10+ in the starting zones in the Season of Discovery as follows:

- Kill Rockjaw mobs at Gol’Bolar Quarry until you get
Rabbit Musk.
- Use

Tame Beast on a Rabbit.
- Speak to Toby at Amberstill Ranch (63.6 50.2).

- Kill Goretusk enemies until you get
Goretusk Haunch.

Goretusk Haunch as bait at 35.0 38.5 to summon Silverspur.
- Kill Silverspur to get

Crab Treats by fishing or killing Blackwood mobs west of Auberdine or in the very south.
- Feed

Loch Modan:
- In a cabinet inside the building behind Daryl the Youngling (83.4 65.2).
Silverpine Forest:
- Kill Ferocious Grizzled Bear or Giant Grizzled Bear until Grizzled Protector is summoned.
- Kill Grizzled Protector to get
Rune of Beast Mastery.
The Barrens:
- Drop a trap on the path of Patrolling Cheetah around (44 55) to remove its speed buff and kill it.
How to Get Sniper Training in SoD
You get the Sniper Training rune (Legs) in the level 10+ quest zones in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Westfall:
- Drops from Level 17 Elite Defias Scout in Westfall (52 53).
Darkshore:
- Pick up
Gnarled Harpoon (44 20) from Beached Sea Turtle. Via our feedback button: “The harpoons to kill Paxnozz also spawn in the water around where he patrols”.
- Take
Gnarled Harpoon to (50 14) and kill Paxnozz.
- Pick up
Loch Modan:
- Drops from Elite Crocolisk Kackle around (54 54) in Loch Modan.
The Barrens:
- Talk to Kilxx at the docks in Ratchet (63 38).
- Buy 1x
Fishing Harpoon.
- Find the shark Bruuz in the bay of Ratchet.
- Use
Fishing Harpoon and kill the shark.
How to Get Cobra Strikes in SoD
You get the Cobra Strikes rune (Chest) in the level 20+ quest zone in Season of Discovery as follows:
- Purchase
Freshwater Snapper Bait from Zixil who is traveling on the main road in the Hillsbrad Foothills.
- Go to the lake south of Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad Foothills.
- Use
Freshwater Snapper Bait on a small boat at the lake to spawn the Level 25 Elite turtle Koartul. The turtle drops
Cobra Strikes.
How to Get Kill Shot in SoD
You get the Kill Shot rune (Legs) through drops in Ashenvale and Wailing Caverns in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Get the quest
Wild Wyvern Wrangling from Jixo Madrocket in Stonetalon Mountains (61 62).
- Go to Ashenvale and kill Furbolgs, until they drop
Wild Magic Essence.
- Combine
Wild Magic Essence with
Greater Magic Wand to get
Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic.
Greater Magic Wand is crafted by Enchanters.
- Defeat Mutanus the Devourer in the Wailing Caverns to get
Hypnotic Crystal.
- Go back to Jixo Madrocket and turn in the quest. You’ll receive the follow-up quest
Wrangling a Wild Wyvern.
- Complete the quest by watching Jixo Madrocket and you’ll get the rune.
Note: Kill Shot replaces the Kill Command rune in SoD Phase 4. Up until phase 3, Kill Command was available in the way described above. In P4, it will be removed.
How to Get Cobra Slayer in SoD
You get the Cobra Slayer rune (Hands) from a level 25 Elite mob in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Go to the Thelgen Rock Cave in the Wetlands at (42 64) and kill the elite owl Carrodin.
Note: Cobra Slayer replaces the Heart of the Lion rune in SoD Phase 4. Heart of the Lion is now learned as a baseline ability from a skill book.
How to Get Lone Wolf in SoD
You get the Lone Wolf rune (Chest) by buying it in Ratchet in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Update: Since the hotfix on April 16, 2024, you can buy Rune of Lone Wolf directly from Grizzby in Ratchet for 3g. It is no longer necessary to deliver the items listed below.
The following steps are no longer necessary to get the rune:
- Go to Ratchet in the Barrens and talk to Grizzby in the Inn (62 39). For his quests, you have to collect the following materials:
- 24x
Fish Oil:
- Drops from Murlocs and Naga e.g. in Hillsbrad Foothills.
- 20x
Dark Iron Ordinance:
- Drops from Level 27 – 31 Elite Dark Iron Dwarves in Wetlands.
- 16x
Shredder Turbocharger:
- To get
Shredder Turbocharger, use
Shredder Autosalvage Unit on Venture Co. Light Shredder in Stonetalon Mountains around Windshear Crag (not a guaranteed drop).
Shredder Autosalvage Unit is crafted by Engineering. The recipe is a drop from Sneed in Deadmines.

Let Me Make You An Offer from Grizzby.
- Hand in the quest to the following NPCs in your faction’s capital:
Master Wood in Old Town in Stormwind City (79.2 47.6).
Zel'mak in The Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar (80.2 29.6)
- Accept the quest
You've Got Yourself A Deal from Master Wood or
You've Got Yourself A Deal from Zel'mak which leads you back to Grizzby in Ratchet.
- Hand in the quest to Grizzby. He will now sell you
Rune of Lone Wolf for 3 gold.
If you can’t see the quest, your character level is too low. The quest should be available at level 20.
How to Get Serpent Spread in SoD
You get the Serpent Spread rune (Legs) by turning in Waylaid Supplies and Supply Shipments for reputation in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Alliance:
- Can be purchased from the Azeroth Commerce Authority faction once Friendly has been achieved.
Horde:
- Can be purchased from the Durotar Supply and Logistics faction once Friendly has been achieved.

How to Get Steady Shot in SoD
You get the Steady Shot rune (Waist) in Arathi Highlands in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Kill Needletooth in the lake at Witherbark Village in the southeast of Arathi Highlands (~68 66).
How to Get Dual Wield Specialization in SoD
You get the Dual Wield Specialization rune (Feet) in Stranglethorn Vale in the Season of Discovery as follows:
Prerequisite: Flare is needed to get this rune. It doesn’t have to be you, just some player there.
- Around 31.89 15.7 in Stranglethorn Vale you’ll get the debuff
Danger!.
- Use
Flare to detect the source of the danger. This will cause Bloodscalp Guerrilla to spawn.
- Kill Bloodscalp Guerrilla to get Rune of the Scrapper and learn the rune from it.
How to Get Wyvern Strike in SoD
You get the Wyvern Strike rune (Feet) in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Go to Amaryllis Webb in Swamp of Sorrows at 25.0 54.2.
- Buy
Entomology Starter Kit which contains
Bug Catching Net and
Field Guide.
- Catch three bugs in any order which can be found at the following locations:
- Arbor Tarantula in Stranglethorn Vale:
- At the Venture Co. Base Camp at Lake Nazferiti. It can spawn on several of the tree stumps in the camp (e.g. at 43.8 18.6, 44.2 22.0, and 45.6 23.0).
- Hay Weevil in Arathi Highlands in or near any of the stables and barns at the following farms:
- Northfold Manor in the northwest (known spawn locations at 31.0 26.2, 30.8 28.6, and 32.2 31.0).
- Dabyrie’s Farmstead northeast of Refuge Point (known spawn locations at 54.0 38.6 and 57.0 39.8).
- Go’Shek Farm northwest of Witherbark Village (known spawn locations at 59.6 57.0, 61.2 55.6, and 62.6 56.0).
- Flesh Picker in Desolace:
- Several spawn locations at the Kodo Graveyard (~ 51 59)
- Arbor Tarantula in Stranglethorn Vale:
- Return to Amaryllis Webb, turn in the bugs, and you’ll get the rune.
Important: Before handing in the bugs, make sure to have a bag slot available. Otherwise, you won’t get the rune and have to do the bug search all over again.
Note: Wyvern Strike replaces the Invigoration rune in SoD Phase 4. Up until phase 3, Invigoration was available in the way described above. In P4, it will be removed.
How to Get Expose Weakness in SoD
You get the Expose Weakness rune (Waist) in the Badlands and Stranglethorn Vale in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Kill humanoid mobs in Badlands (e.g. Dustbelcher Ogre and Dustbelcher Brute around 29.6 56.6 and 61.4 68.8) until you get
Primitive Drawing. It starts the quest
Terror of the Desert Skies.
- Turn in
Terror of the Desert Skies at Hemet Nesingwary in Stranglethorn Vale (35.6 10.8). You will get the quest
Terror of the Desert Skies and
Empty Bait Cage.
- Use
Empty Bait Cage to capture any critter.
- Go to 22.4 66.7 in Badlands where you will find a nest.
- Click the nest. This will cause the level 40 mob Gharrik to spawn.
- Kill Gharrik to get
Crimson Trophy Quill.
- Return to Hemet Nesingwary, turn in the Quill, and you’ll get
Rune of Expose Weakness.
How to Get Trap Launcher in SoD
You get the Trap Launcher rune (Feet) at level 30 in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Find the Extinguished Campfire at the Kodo Graveyard in Desolace at 47.5 54.6. You’ll get the quest
Highway Robbery (requires level 30).
- Go to Bibbly F'utzbuckle northeast of the Kodo Graveyard at 62.2 38.8 and turn in the quest. You’ll get the quest
On the Lam.
- Go to Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale. Turn in the quest at Tokal in the Booty Bay Inn (27.0 77.2). You’ll get the quest
Cherry for Your Thoughts?.
- Buy
Cherry Grog from Nixxrax Fillamug.
- Turn in the quest at Tokal. You’ll get the quest
No Honor Among Thieves.
- Use the rowboat found at 53 91 on the Arathi Highlands map. It will teleport you to the eastern shore.
- Talk to Illari Duskfeather at the docks (93.8 71.4 on the Arathi Highlands map).
- Fight Illari Duskfeather and loot her bag to get
Illari's Key. Note:
Night Elves have the option to talk to her peacefully without a fight.
Tip: If someone has just fought her, you can loot the key from her bag as well. Then wait for her to respawn, talk to her and you can continue to the next - Open the chest near Illari Duskfeather at the docks to turn in the quest. You’ll get
Jewel-Encrusted Box which contains the rune.
Note: This questline only needs to be completed once per account starting in SoD Phase 5. You can then buy item Emblem of Dishonor from Pix Xizzix at 28.4 75.8 in Booty Bay and mail it to an alt char. The emblem can be redeemed at a Rune Broker in any of the major cities to unlock the corresponding rune of the class.
How to Get Melee Specialist in SoD
You get the Melee Specialist rune (Waist) in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Talk to Dalaran Agent in Ariden’s Camp in eastern Deadwind Pass (52.0 34.6). You’ll get
Ariden's Sigil.
- Equip
Ariden's Sigil (or be with a player who has equipped it).
- Kill all 7 Dark Rider found around the following locations and obtain their relics. You will get the
Dark Presence buff when you’re in the right spot. Then use
Ariden's Sigil to reveal the Dark Rider.
- Deadwind Pass ~ 44 29 (drops
Curious Dalaran Relic)
- Duskwood ~ 23 46 (drops
Glittering Dalaran Relic)
- Swamp of Sorrows ~ 70 29 (drops

You can then buy item Emblem of the Violet Eye from Pix Xizzix at 28.4 75.8 in Booty Bay and mail it to an alt char. The emblem can be redeemed at a Rune Broker in any of the major cities to unlock the corresponding rune of the class.
How to Get T.N.T. in SoD
You get the T.N.T. rune (Wrists) in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Buy
Rune of Detonation for 1g 60s from one of the following Emerald Wardens Quartermasters:
- Quartermaster Alandra south of Seradane in The Hinterlands (61.2 34.6).
- Quartermaster Falinar at The Twilight Grove in Duskwood (45.6 51.2).
- Quartermaster Kyleen northeast of Satyrnaar in Ashenvale (89.6 40.6).
- Quartermaster Valdane north of The Twin Colossals in Feralas (48.1 12.7).
Note: Until Phase 4, it was necessary to reach Friendly with the Emerald Wardens faction to buy the rune. In P4, this requirement was removed.
How to Get Raptor Fury in SoD
You get the Raptor Fury rune (Wrists) in Tanaris the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Find the level 43 elite Zopilote that is pathing around south and southwest of Gadgetzan in Tanaris, e.g. around 43.0 32.6.
- Kill Zopilote to get
Rune of the Raptor.
How to Get Catlike Reflexes in SoD
You get the Catlike Reflexes rune (Head) in Feralas the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Buy
Soft Banana Bread or
Tel'Abim Banana from a food vendor or innkeeper. In Feralas e.g. the following NPCs sell one of the items:
- Loorana in Camp Mojache (75.4 43.8).
- Innkeeper Greul in Camp Mojache (74.8 45.0).
- Mardrack Greenwell in Feathermoon Stronghold (31.0 43.2).
- Go to the yeti cave in Feralas at 53 55.
- Find Groddoc Infant at 53 60 on the upper level in the back of the cave.
Note: You can do this as a group, but every player needs to have the food item. - Feed
Soft Banana Bread or
Tel'Abim Banana to Groddoc Infant.
- Within 10 minutes, escort Groddoc Infant to Groddoc Matriarch at 59.1 58.2 on a little hill. You’ll get
Rune of the Jungle Cat.
Note: When you’re in a group the players who didn’t feed the baby in the cave can now feed them and will also get the rune.
How to Get Focus Fire in SoD
You get the Focus Fire rune (Wrists) in Searing Gorge the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Go to the bridge at 53 57 in Searing Gorge. By the bridge, you’ll find a long branch sticking out into the canyon.
- Walk to the Stormcrow Nest at the end of the branch.
- Pick up the
Stormcrow Egg and go off the branch. Enraged Stormcrow will spawn (can take up to 20 seconds).
- Kill Enraged Stormcrow to get
Rune of Focused Fire.
How to Get Rapid Killing in SoD
You get the Rapid Killing rune (Head) at level 45 in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Go to the cave at 21 35 west of Thorium Point in Searing Gorge.
- Inside the cave, find Weathered Etching at 14.5 36.5. Click on it to start the quest
The Burning Beast (requires level 45).
- Go to 50.6 14.2 in Blasted Lands and turn in the quest at Bloodmage Lynnore. You’ll get the follow-up quest
Chains That Bind.
- Kill Shadowsworn mobs on the western or eastern edges of the zone until you get 5x
Infernal Chain Link.
- Return to Bloodmage Lynnore and turn in the quest. You’ll get the follow-up quest
Brought to Heel.
- Kill Calefactus the Unleashed with the help of
Infernal Lasso (provided).
- Calefactus the Unleashed can be found northwest of the Dark Portal and has several spawn points, e.g. around 47.0 47.8 or 46.8 34.6 (you can use
Track Beasts).
- Calefactus the Unleashed can be found northwest of the Dark Portal and has several spawn points, e.g. around 47.0 47.8 or 46.8 34.6 (you can use
- Loot
Fel Lifeblood from Calefactus the Unleashed.
- Return to Bloodmage Lynnore and turn in the quest. You’ll get
Rune of the Ravenous and
Infernal Lasso.
Note: With Infernal Lasso you can tame a Core Hound and get your own Core Hound pet.
How to Get Lock and Load in SoD
You get the Lock and Load rune (Head) in the Season of Discovery as follows:

- Accept the quest
The Wild Gods from Shadowtooth Emissary in the Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood (51.6 82.0). Note: The quest requires level 40 and is not sharable.
- [Only needs to be completed by one player in the group] Kill elites in Jintha’alor in The Hinterlands until you get
Wildwhisper Draught.
- Kill the final boss in Razorfen Downs and clear the area.

Wildwhisper Draught on the small ledge. This will cause the Spirit of Agamaggan to spawn.

- Collect 3
Wild Offering in Zul’Farrak, Maraudon, or Blackrock Depths. You can go to the same dungeon multiple times (e.g. 3x Zul’Farrak). Everyone in the group can loot the items regardless of whether having the quest or not. However, to get the rune, you will need to accept the quest sooner or later.
- Zul’Farrak:
- Kill 2-3 bosses (may depend on the boss combination) to spawn a spider ghost.
- The chat emote “You feel a shadowed presence” indicates that you did it correctly.
- The spider patrols around and south of Gahz'rilla.
- Use
Agamaggan's Roar near the spider ghost. This will cause the level 52 elite Delirious Ancient to spawn.
- Kill the mob and loot
Wild Offering.
- Kill 2-3 bosses (may depend on the boss combination) to spawn a spider ghost.
- Maraudon:
- Kill Princess Theradras to spawn a raptor ghost in the water on the upper level.
The chat emote “You feel a shadowed presence” indicates that you did it correctly. - Use
Agamaggan's Roar near the raptor ghost. This will cause the level 52 elite Delirious Ancient to spawn.
- Kill the mob and loot
Wild Offering.

- Blackrock Depths:
- Kill Houndmaster Grebmar, High Interrogator Gerstahn, and the Ring of Law to spawn a basilisk ghost on the Dark Iron Highway leading to Bael’gar.

Agamaggan's Roar near the basilik ghost. This will cause the level 52 elite Delirious Ancient to spawn.
- Kill the mob and loot
Wild Offering.
- Kill Houndmaster Grebmar, High Interrogator Gerstahn, and the Ring of Law to spawn a basilisk ghost on the Dark Iron Highway leading to Bael’gar.
- Zul’Farrak:
- Return to Shadowtooth Emissary in Felwood and turn in the quest. You’ll receive
Hyjal's Wisdom from which you can learn the rune.

Note: This questline only needs to be completed once per account starting in SoD Phase 5. You can then buy item Emblem of the Wild Gods from Pix Xizzix at 28.4 75.8 in Booty Bay and mail it to an alt char. The emblem can be redeemed at a Rune Broker in any of the major cities to unlock the corresponding rune of the class.

You get the Hit and Run rune (Back) in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Get
Rune of the Guerrilla which drops from the following mobs:
- Escaped Core Hound in Burning Steppes. Confirmed spawn locations are at 24.8 55.6, 31.8 53.0, 39.8 59.4, 61.4 51.0, 88.6 54.8, 83.8 60.0, and 84.8 68.0.
- Calefactus the Unleashed in Blasted Lands patrolling in the west between Deadmaul Hold and The Dark Portal.
How to Get Improved Volley in SoD
You get the Improved Volley rune (Back) in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Kill mobs in Silithus until you get
Busted Gizmo. Confirmed mobs that drop it are e.g. Stonelash Pincer, Twilight Avenger, Rock Stalker, Tortured Druid, and Dust Stormer.
- Bring
Busted Gizmo to Edwi Copperbolt at 41.2 88.8 in the Bronzebeard Encampment in the south of Silithus. You’ll get
Desert Sonar.
- Go to the area north of Bronzebeard Encampment marked on the map below.
- Run around in the area until you see a rumbling rocks animation. Confirmed locations are e.g. at 33 66, 41 66, 41.5 67.5, and 37 61.
- Use
Desert Sonar. This will cause a level 60 Elite Sandworm to spawn.
- Kill Sandworm to get
Rune of Shelling from which you can learn the rune.

How to Get Resourcefulness in SoD
You get the Resourcefulness rune (Back) in Eastern Plaguelands in the Season of Discovery as follows:
- Kill Plagued Swine in Eastern Plaguelands west of Plaguewood around 17 31 until you get
Tainted Boar Meat.
- Kill slimes (e.g. Living Decay or Rotting Sludge) northwest of Corrin’s Crossing around 55 67 until you get
Bubbling Green Ichor.
- Combine
Tainted Boar Meat and
Bubbling Green Ichor to get
Rancid Hunk of Flesh.
- Feed
Rancid Hunk of Flesh to a Carrion Grub which can be found all over the southern part of Eastern Plaguelands. It will puke a skeleton.
